What TikTok says about views and the For You feed
TikTok explained in 2020 how the For You feed chooses videos. It looks at how people react to videos (likes, shares, comments, the accounts they follow), at information about the video (captions, sounds and hashtags), and at settings like language and country. TikTok wrote that “neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors in the recommendation system.”
TikTok also wrote that a strong sign of interest, like when a person “finishes watching a longer video from beginning to end”, gets more weight. So the most useful question for each video is simple: did people watch it to the end?
Why are my TikTok views not increasing? The common causes
Most videos have more than one cause, so read all of them.
1. The first seconds do not hold people
Many people swipe away very fast. If the video starts with a logo, a long intro or a quiet moment, they leave before the song starts. Start with the strongest part: the chorus, your voice, or the moment that makes people curious.
2. The video uses reused or unoriginal clips
TikTok’s Community Guidelines say that “reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits, such as clips that show someone else’s watermark or logo” cannot be shown in the For You feed. TikTok also wrote that it does not recommend duplicated content. A clip downloaded from another app, with that app’s logo on it, often gets very few views for this reason.
3. The caption, sound and hashtags do not say what the video is
TikTok uses captions, sounds and hashtags to understand a video. A short caption that says what the video is about helps TikTok show it to people who like this kind of music. Use a few hashtags that describe the video, like the music style or the song name.
4. Your account is new
A new account has few followers and little history. Most of your views must come from the For You feed, and the first videos often get small numbers. That is completely normal. Keep a steady plan for some weeks before you judge your account.
5. The video breaks a TikTok rule
TikTok lists the content it does not show in the For You feed in its Community Guidelines. If one video gets far fewer views than the others, read the guidelines and check if something in the video could be the reason, for example a clip from TV or a film.
Why is my TikTok at 0 views?
If a video stays at 0 views for many hours, first check the simple things. Check that your account is public, and check who can watch the video in its privacy settings. Then check the video for reused clips and logos from other apps (cause 2). If all of this is fine, post your next video as planned, and look at the result after a few days.

What to do for your next TikTok video, step by step
- Start with the strongest part of the song or the moment, in the first second.
- Film your own video. Do not use clips with a logo from another app.
- Write a short caption that says what the video is, and add a few hashtags about the music.
- Use your own song as the sound, so people who like it can find more of your videos.
- Keep the video short enough that most people watch to the end.
- Reply to the first comments, so people come back to the video.
- After three days, check how long people watched. Make your next video more like the one people watched longest.
